Soldiers helping rebuild Iraqi cities
When the members of the 926th Engineer Brigade arrived at the impoverished neighborhoods of the Sadr City district in northern Baghdad, streets were filled with garbage and raw sewage. Buildings were crumbling and shopkeepers were too frightened to go to work. Now, with the help of the Army Reserve unit based in Montgomery, the streets are cleared, shops are being rebuilt and Iraqis are returning to the markets. The 926th, which includes about 120 Army reservists from Alabama and about 20 other states, left Montgomery in February and boarded buses for Camp Shelby, Miss., for about two months of intensive training before heading to Baghdad for about 10 months. The brigade oversees construction of projects such as rebuilding schools and clinics. It has worked on projects in Sadr City through Task Force Gold, an initiative of Multi-National Force-Iraq, the coalition force under Gen. David Petraeus. The brigade's commander, Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Talley, in June briefed Petraeus on their progress. The efforts in Sadr City exemplify what Talley told the unit about their mission when they left in February. "It's not about us," Talley said. "It's about the Iraqi people. It's about waving the Iraqi flag, not the American flag."To read the entire article, copy the following link into your web browser:http://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080901/NEWS01/809010319

Action Alert Asks...
President-Elect Barack Obama withdraws Iraq agenda from Change.gov website
Today President-Elect Barack Obama removed his Iraq and Afghanistan policy agenda from his transition website.
We, as the Military Families and supporters of the brave troops fighting overseas are asking,
"Does this represent a shift in Mr. Obama's position on Iraq?"
We also want to know whether this means that, in light of the information he received during his national intelligence briefing last week, he will now be allowing our troops to finish the mission in Iraq?
Military Families United has always stood up for our troops and their families. America's troops and their families have a right to know where the man that America just elected to be president stands on these issues.
His promises throughout the campaign made it clear that he was going to begin pulling out of Iraq when he became President. His "Agenda" page on the Change.gov website reflected these sentiments until this week, when they were mysteriously erased from the website.
Our military families just have one simple question… Why?
Contact President-Elect Barack Obama’s office today to tell him what you think. Make sure you tell him you are a proud supporter of our military families and Military Families United.
It is important we get as many supporters of our military to ask him these questions and that we encourage him to give us a clear answer.
Sincerely,
Brian Wise
Executive Director
